This important early literacy initiative mails every child from birth through age 5 one free, age-appropriate book every month. Enroll the children in your life today to begin getting free books and to inspire the love of reading from a young age.

Science shows that a child's brain is already 80% developed by 3 years old. Through reading, children begin to learn words and sounds, recognize pictures, and understand emotions.

Entertainment icon and savvy businesswoman Dolly Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995. Growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, her father's inability to read and write inspired her to begin her Imagination Library within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts over 2 million free books each month to children around the world.

After seeing the impact of the program on her own family, First Lady Fran DeWine established the Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ohio in 2019. In November of 2020, it grew to encompass all 88 counties of Ohio.

How long does it take to start receiving books?

What books will my child receive in this program?
The first book a child receives is The Little Engine That Could. When the child turns 5 and graduates from the program, they will receive Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! All other books during the course of the program can be found here.

Can children in the Foster Care system receive books?
Yes. In Ohio, we want to make sure every child receives a monthly book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio. By working with the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, we have found a way to streamline enrollment for children in foster care. These children have been eligible to receive the books, but in the past, it has been challenging to update addresses appropriately.
By having the department's support, DPIL can ensure that books follow the child in a timely manner. Address will be updated and the monthly book delivery will follow the child from foster home to foster home. DPIL is also ensuring that the information regarding children in foster care, and foster care parents, continues to remain protected.

Do you offer bilingual book options?
Yes. Get a jump on bilingual early literary with the 100% bilingual English/Spanish Imagination Library book collection in Ohio. This option is now available for all future registrations to DPIL, and current registrants can opt-in to update their child’s account. For new enrollments to the program, the online registration form will present two options: English (with a few bilingual books mailed each year) or bilingual English/Spanish (100% bilingual collection). Parents can choose which collection they would like their child to receive.
Parents looking to opt-in to the new bilingual option can log in to their child's account at ohioimaginationlibrary.org. After logging in, parents can choose their Book Language preference.
