WCDPL thanks YOU for your support!
I would like to thank all of the Wood County residents who reached out to their House Representative and to the House Speaker over the past week, sharing their personal stories of how their library positively impacts their lives. These voices are essential in underscoring the importance of libraries as vital community hubs.
On Tuesday, the House Finance Committee amended the budget to allocate $490 million in library funds for fiscal year 2026 and $500 million for fiscal year 2027. Thank you, Representative Ghanbari, for your work in submitting an amendment helping libraries.
While we appreciate the House's efforts to adjust the funding proposal, it’s important to note that the current version of the bill still falls short of the amount libraries are estimated to receive this current fiscal year (an estimated $530 million in FY 2025, which runs July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025).
See the attached Appropriations Spreadsheet from the Legislative Service Commission.
“This gap is concerning, as it directly impacts the ability of libraries to continue providing essential services that benefit all Ohioans,” said Michelle Francis, executive director of the Ohio Library Council. “Every two years, we engage in this process to defend the Public Library Fund, advocating for the percentage allocated to libraries as well as highlighting the significant value and savings libraries provide to taxpayers.”
Local libraries play a crucial role in delivering critical services, including access to educational resources, technology, and workforce development programs.
“We still have concerns with the House’s version of the bill. As we move forward, we remain committed to working with the legislature and the Ohio Senate to ensure that libraries receive the full support they need to continue serving Ohio communities,” Francis said.
Sincerely,
Michael Penrod
